Attended Christian Brothers. – run undergraduate school
(St Mary’s College, Moraga, CA); there exposed to wine appreciation through non-credit courses offered by Chemistry
Instructor, Brother Myron Collins, F.S.C. and enhanced by numerous trips to the Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino area.
Post-Graduate work @UC Irvine, CA-emphasis on Biochemistry – M.Sc. degree

From 1978 – 1982

While pursuing post-graduate degree in Chemistry @ University of Pacific, Stockton, CA had opportunity to work part-time at a small Family owned Winery in Northern Central San Joaquin Valley. Learned basic commercial cellar handling of wine “hands-on”. Following two harvest seasons, linked up with Richard Spencer (St Amant Winery) and Learned viticulture end of winemaking process. Assisted Mr Spencer in harvest and crush of his grapes for two seasons. Landed seasonal job in Lodi District; became full-time post crust-first cellar then lab, worked way up to unofficial “assistant winemaker”.

From 1983 – 1990

Had opportunity to link up with Lodi District bulk wine operation, satellite production facility for E & J Gallo
Finished MSC in Analytical Chemistry
Began taking UC Davis extension courses to broaden winemaking expertise/skills

From 1990 – 2000

Landed job @ Glen Ellen Winery, Sonoma – in charge of grower program involving producing pilot lots of wine to identify quality features of individual vineyards.
Developed reputation for good palate – became trouble shooter for all wine quality issues at commercial level, Nickname: “Dr Bill”.
Toured vineyards throughout CA (Territory from Ukiah to Santa Maria).
Retired from company following three mergers.

From 2001 – Present

I was contacted by Mark Scribner, one of the growers from Glen Ellen days. Working as Consulting Wine Maker in Lodi District at this time.
